If you must know, I was born to parents of good family - yes, those Carringtons - and educated as well as our diminished fortunes would permit. Like many others of good birth, our family holdings had been sadly reduced by the wars. Unlike others, we were never forced to stoop to actually working for a living.
I was fortunate enough to contract a favorable marriage to Lord Howell, whose ... unfortunate ... death left me his title and considerable property. It really is a shame the rest of his family predeceased him. Why I believe the shock of their deaths might have hastened the poor man's demise.
