It's been a while since I've done any sort of planned/coordinated RP. Mostly due to time constraints.
I like the idea of player created quests, as a means of conveying a story line. Kind of gives the character a bit of a purpose.
The one thing that I don't like all that much about events, is that most usually end up as a place talk and chat about the things you do. Which is not bad if that's what you're looking for. However, from my point of view ... and limited time. I'd rather spend my time in game working towards something. In the end, it's all a matter of how things are presented and run.
My feeling is, most events are places to mingle. Not really do a ton of in-depth RP. More of that in-depth RP happens after you gone to the event, and *left* again with someone else. But events are good for meeting people and directing new people to community to help get their face out there.
Let's face it, the RP community of ShC is not gone by any means, but it CAN seem hidden at times behind the bustle of an old server. Events are good for that and getting people to mingle. It's up to the people that GO to the events to DO something, I think, though.
I think some more events, honestly especially Aside, would be helpful. The Leaf is great--but by running so often, it's also hard to feel any impetus to go, honestly. A weekly or monthly event might be good for drawing more attention now and then.
I answered "Other" though, because I love the idea of plots. Not necessarily QUESTS, but plots. It seems I get a lot of "chit chat" RP, and i like that, it's easy to coordinate (none necessary!), but it's hard to have much long term interest in.
I think having some designated "hang out" spots again would be *wonderful* as well. I was just talking about this. Have people gather in the Pig & whistle, or the Blue Recluse in SW, at the pond in TB again, etc. Nothing formal, nothing major, just a "If I'm here, I'm DEFINITELY looking for RP". Events can be hard to do this really "I'm here... I'm available...." thing, because there's stuff going on all around. I don't know if that makes sense. >.> I just know when I do things like go to an *event*, sometimes it seems hard to "break in", and I have *established* characters. I don't know what I'd do if I was new.
This was a tough one! I love a good plot, but they're hard to manage and keep control of, let alone ones that are open to anyone of any description.
Events are good, but also then someone has to 'host' or run them and that can be tiring I'm sure. They're also often limited to certain short times and limited places, so the chances of catching some random new RPers could be better. The 'world' is so big now it's hard to find a good place to maximise the number of RPers who can attend without a huge advertising campaign in advance.
As Hakka has said, hotspots could be a good meeting place and could also involve quests/plots or events on certain days etc I suppose?
I personally really enjoy the cross-faction events - Leaf Under the Stars nights, Fight Nights etc, but they're hard for the organiser to manage due to the language barrier etc. It's still a lot of fun to see famous people from the Other Side that you don't normally glimpse in the pixel-flesh, so to speak :)
I'm chiming in to /roll assist on Heulwen's vote for more cross-faction events. I am an XFac Groupie. I really, really miss my Aside friends back from White Hart.
It can be very hard to do XFac gigs in game - and you pretty much need a "translator" PC - but RealID now makes that infinitely easier, which is nice! So yes, more of them please, all!
(I also love the idea of Hotspots but find them riddled with hardship in terms of logistical planning and widespread word of mouth advertising)
One of my terrible dark secrets I'm about to reveal to the world is that I'm a sucker for player quests. Also, Kil'jaedan wears a pink frilly dress and calls himself the Prettiest Princess on the weekends, but you didn't hear that from me.
ANYWAY. It can be a bitch to do, but they're fun. One I've broken out often is the epic, harrowing quest for a Deviate Sandwich. Translation: Sit in the Crossroads and berate passersby to fetch me some Deviate fish and bread, in return I'd cook them up a few batches and give a bit of coin. Ninja fun for the whole family.
Of course you have to be really bored or silly to hang out in low-populated areas like the Crossroads to do that sort of thing.

I like stories loosely controlled by a Storyteller, with some plot or trouble for the other characters to deal with. Sort of like how I imagine pen & paper RPG things to go. It can be difficult for the Storyteller to set up, but if done well, they're pretty great.

Thinking about it, I think you're right... I actually like the idea of plots.
On the plus side, a well done plot line does spread like wildfire. On the down side, managing them can become a chore.
