Your Character's(s') Soundtrack(s)
I realize there is an ancient thread concerning music, but this topic is slightly different. Does your character have a soundtrack that you play to, or a set of songs that seem to capture what your character is about? If so, let's hear it. Explanations why are ideal.
Cocteau Twins - Beatrix: This particular track has a definate Eastern vibe and a glittery feel, appropriate for most any Blood Elf. Elizabeth Fraser's vocals are almost always unintelligible, creating more of a mood than definate meaning. The Cocteaus have always struck me as a particularly feminine act, largely due to the stunning beauty of Fraser's voice. There is something of the harem here, music suitable for a secretive place that most of the world will never see.
Goldfrapp - Cologne Cerrone Houdini: Moments of perfection / Idle in the sunshine / Over there in yonder / In another world. . . I'm not your kind / I'm not your girl. Definately captures Szeharia's detachment from pedestrian concerns and being out of reach of most everyone.
Portishead - All Mine: I can hardly wait to hold you and fold you / Never enough, render your heart to me / All mine / You have to be. . . So don't resist, we shall exist / Until the day, until the day I die. Dark, full of menacing strings with a gnarled guitar solo, entrancing and very, very dangerous. This song captures Szeharia 's nightmarish possessiveness that I suspect we will be seeing a great deal more of in the near future. Beth Gibbons' vocals are as alluring as they are terrifying here. Portishead's Glory Box is also very suitable.
Roxy Music - Beauty Queen & Mother of Pearl: Bryan Ferry's paeons to beauty make Roxy Music particularly appropriate for Szeharia. Lines such as Swaying palms at your feet / You're the pride of your street / While you worship the sun or Looking for love / In a looking glass world / Is pretty hard for you. . . Oh mother of pearl / So so semi-precious / In your detached world fit her perfectly.
Kate Bush - Under Ice: Very strange to see Kate Bush on the same playlist as Roxy Music to be certain, but there is something frozen underneath Szeharia's surface. There's something moving under. . . Under ice. . . Trying to get out of the cold water. . . It's ME!
Bernard Herrmann - Twisted Nerve: From the soundtrack to Kill Bill, vol 1. Another example of beauty and horror being juxaposed.
Bjork - Bachelorette: I'm a path of cinders / Burning under you feet / You're the one who walks me / I'm your one-way street. Another dark track with menacing strings, very unsettling. One of my favorite Bjork songs.
Broadcast - Pendulum: Captured under hypnosis / Faster and faster images. . . Logic offers no defense / Underneath this influence. Very hypnotic, although I am not sure whether this is the effect Szeharia has on others, or the effect she is under herself.
Siouxsie & the Banshees - The Sweetest Chill: Do I really need to explain this one?
Garbage - Temptation Waits: Szeharia is not exactly a temptress, but lines such as I'll tell you something / I am a wolf but / I like to wear sheep's clothing and You are a secret / A mere possession / I like to keep you guessing do catch her at her fortune-hunting finest.
David Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul & Fashion: Even though I cannot quite pin down what LGS is getting at, the jazz piano (and Bowie's vocals) give this track considerable elegance, and make it seem particularly appropriate with lines such as She will be your living end. Fashion, on the other hand, is an obvious choice.
Franz Ferdinand - Darts of Pleasure: Most all of Franz Ferdinand's music strikes me as sounding decadent and sinister in both sound and delivery.
Depeche Mode - I Feel You: A number of tracks from Songs of Faith and Devotion would be appropriate, but lyrics such as I feel you / Your rising sun / My kingdom comes and Where angels sing / And spread their wings / My love's on high / You take me home / To glory's throne catch Szeharia at her most ambitious, transcendental moments where nothing in the world is really good enough for her.
The Beatles - Tommorrow Never Knows: Drug use, Eastern psychedelia, & more trascendental lyrics. Lay down all thought / Surrender to the void / It is shining / It is shining. I did -not- expect the Beatles to make this list, but it does seem appropriate for when Szeharia involves herself in bizarre demonic rituals.
Shivaree - Little Black Mess: I should try to be good / For ever and ever A deliciously unconvincing song, full of lines I fully expect Szeharia to use on Llew.

For some reason, listening
For some reason, listening to more modern pop music doesn't work for me when I'm playing a fantasy video game. I try to get soundtracks of epic-type music and put it all in a play list and put that bitch on "shuffle". It works most of the time since I tend to PvP a lot, so I've got some 300, some Rome:Total War, Medieval: Total War, Hitman: Blood Money, some Warhammer, that kinda thing.
Beyond a doubt though, my absolute all-time favorite thing to listen to while playing Olaff, especially battlegrounds and arena, is something I got for shitzengiggeln one day while having swashbuckling adventures in downloading illegally on the high internet seas. Look up "Red Army Choir - The Definitive Collection 2CD" some day. "The Red Army is the Strongest", "Korobelniki", "Smuglianka", "National Anthem of the USSR", "The Cossacks", that kinda thing. It's weird--I despise the USSR and everything it stood for, but MAN can they belt out some good music!

Now...when you say "Critique Welcomed", does that mean like..."Tool is the worst band of degenerate mutants ever to play instruments who actually manage to be more hideous and less talented than their own roadies"? I ask because music can be something of a hot-button issue among...well, anybody.

Tool - 10,000 Days, Wings for Marie pt. 2. The level of burning fury suppressed and suffusing this well and finely crafted song suits the madness seething beneath Aktarin. "Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down/ Without you to guide them all to Zion? What are they going to do when the rivers overrun/ Other than tremble incessantly? High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground./ You were the light and the way they'll only read about." magnificently covers how Aktarin feels about Tyrande, as the fury the singer feels reflects her own sense of outrage at how others do not appreciate Whisperwind the way she does.
NiN - A Warm Place, The Good Soldier, Something I can Never Have, Sunspots. Yes, Aktarin is emo. She's a genuinely insane, self-hating woman well shielded by layers of dedication and devotion to an ideal she doesn't believe she deserves.
Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending. Odd to have on this soundtrack, I know, but deep beneath the madness is some spark of the girl she was, in an ascending violin of longing and sorrow. Aktarin is a blend of longing, sorrow, pain, and a deep fury.
Arvo Parte - Te Deum. The alien and swelling chorus and orchestra in this magnificent piece tie in well with the powerful bonds Akkie's tied around herself.
For Swallowtail:
Dead Can Dance - Bird, Yulunga (Spirit Dance), Rakim. Swallow is primal, and always part of intricate drum work and rhythms. The haunting power of DcD is perfect for her.
Bjork - Pagan Poetry, All is Full of Love, Joga. Bjork's ethereal and wild melodies tie in with the tragedies of the past year for Swallow, while maintaining the thread of her abiding joy and hopefulness.
Tool - Right in Two, Vicarious. While Swallow is lately a good deal happier than she was last year, she IS a fury warrior, and there is a dark stain of rage on her previously sweet soul.
Liquid Tension Experiment - Biaxident. The flowing and powerful melodies of this brilliant nonvocal work perfectly unites the varying threads of Swallow, from primal to sweet, to wild, to angry.
For Vinguld:
Leonard Cohen - Waiting for the Miracle. Something about the rusty sensuous voice and thrumming rhythm just ties perfectly to create a darkly sensual atmosphere for me, which embodies Vinguld at his most feline.
Leo Kotke - The Driver. The chord progressions in this disturbing story build a desolate wasteland, which is ultimately what Vinguld's heart tends to be
Depeche Mode - It's No Good, Strange Love. Vinguld is a sadist, and a control freak. These tie nicely into that..
David Sylvian - Let the Happiness In, I Surrender. These two nicely reflect the poignancy and sorrow in the character.
Ta'Srith:
Rush - The Weapon. Just for the lines and the crashing drums. It characterizes Tas for me, and I'm not sure why. Still building her soundtrack along with Llew's, Samai's and Gyr's.

I actually have a big
I actually have a big 187-song playlist I turn on when writing Artie blogs. I plucked these from that, because these are probably the most poignent of the bunch. At least as far as sound, or feeling, or words.
Some of these are Artie songs. Some are Artie-and-Dria songs. I've actually been thinking about putting together a pinpointed song list like this for the past few days.
Anyway.
A&E, by Goldfrapp. I start here in honor of Sze starting the thread, because one night she whispered me saying, "There's this song that reminds me of Artie and Dria..." This is that song, and though the lyrics are still odd to me the song itself indeed sounds very much like them, at to me. ^_^
32 Flavors, Overlap and Hour Follows Hour by Ani Difranco. If Artie existed in the modern day world, she would groove. Meaningfully. There's a quiet well-meaningness in 32 Flavors as well, and a perseverance I attribute to her. Overlap has a lot of the same with an eye on Artie's appreciation for Dria. Hour Follows Hour matched up to one meaningful night of RP we had, one about change and working through change. "First you decide what you've got to do, then you go out and do it/ And maybe the most that we can do is just to see each other through it."
Shadowland, Love me Still by Bruce Hornsby. Shadowlands is a hard one to explain. It's about looking back, I guess, and seeing where you are now, and perhaps regretting some things along the way. I've looked around for beautiful things / Success I've found out a hallow end / Not so sure for what I stand / All quiet here in the Shadowlands It's very much how Artie feels about her previous life. It's also a gorgeous, thoughtful song. Love Me Still is another Artie/Dria one, very much how Artie often wonders at the love between them.
By Way of Sorrow by Dar Williams/Cry Cry Cry. I just used this one in a blog. It's very folksly, harkening back to Artie's small-villiage roots. And it's about finally getting somewhere wonderful after a lot of pain and difficulty.
What do you Love more than Love, Alleluia, Spring Street, Cool as I Am by Dar Williams. These simply *sound* like Artie. Especially the second, which has NOTHING to do with Artie's story lyrically, but it SOUNDS like Artie, when she's happy and free. Spring Street has some of that sound and is about starting your life over. Cool as I Am is a special one that Kolja sent to me after Artie got together with Dria. When the lyrics say "If I could believe that stuff I'd say that woman has a halo," I still hear his voice saying (about Artie), "I look out and say, 'Yeah, she's really blonde.""
Crash Into Me, Lover Lay Down, Crush by Dave Matthews Band. These are some of the most *intimate* songs I know, at least to me. I don't know what it is about the words or the sound, but they are just.... there is this light dancing-ness, which so well describes some of the depth and intimacy that exists between Artie and Dria. Crush has a bit of that mellow groove as well, and sweeps up into a euphoric kinda thing.
What's Simple is True by Jewel. This is another song that was sent to me and somehow wound itself into Artie's story. It very very very very much defines Artie's whole outlook on life and love.
Power of Two by Indigo Girls. As far as in my own playlist, this is Artie and Dria's "song". Period.
Both Sides Now, Amelia by Joni Mitchell. Before Dria entered Artie's life, Joni Mitchell was like, the definative musical voice of Artie, and Both Sides Now was her theme song. In many ways it still is and always will be. Amelia is the source of Artie's former husband's name, Amelius. Not only in the him being "lost" bit, but also in "Amelia, it was just a false alarm"
A Better Wife, by Erin Mckoewn. Another song that was sent to me, it describes Artie's relationship with her former husband almost perfectly. And the mood of it is just *perfect*.
There are probably a good number more I didn't pick up on. Yes, I listen to a lot of folk music. I also play the banjo. Really.

Well, I'll just list one for Inokentei (updated from one I posted a year ago). There might be a large amount of M.C.R. on this list (but I did see their concert last night, so it's all in my head).
I Never Told You What I Do For A Living- My Chemical Romance: The song sums up a concept album about being a murderer who fell in love. Inokentei is a tormented sort, and the song is sung and written in a style that shows off love, hate, grief, and panic all at once. Sample: 'We'll love again, we'll laugh again, and we'll cry again, and we'll dance again, it's so much better this way- I can't get the blood off the sheets in my bed-!'
The Ghost of You- My Chemical Romance: The song (stand alone) is about being a soldier who goes off to war and leaves behind his beloved; the question then being whether she'll wait for him or move on with life (after his death). (Note: With the album, it's the death of Mercutio and 'Romeo's' flight.) Sample: 'I can't always just forget her, but she could try...You are never comming home, never comming come. Tonight she dies. And all the things that you never ever told me...'
House of Wolves- My Chemical Romance: This song is translatable to the story of the CD, and can stand alone. By itself, it's about being a bad man who went to hell. Simple enough, right? Well, sadly, this could apply to our anti-hero. Sample: 'Well I think I'm gonna burn in hell, everybody burn the house right down, and say yeah what I want to say, tell me I'm an angel, take this too my grave, tell me I'm an angel, tell me I'm a bad man, kick me like a stray.'
Over the Hills and Far Away- Nightwish: The song is about a man who sleeps with the wife of his best friend, and the next day is convicted of theft. Rather than give his alibi, he goes to prison for ten years, and he waits for her through all the years of misery. Well, Ino was never an adulterer, but he's not one for giving up on the long lost. Sample: 'Over the hills and far away, for ten long years he'll count the days, for sure as the rivers reach the seas, back in his arms he swears she'll be.'
Darkness of Greed- Rage Against the Machine: A song about the corruption of governments (real ones) and how the abuse of nations and peoples can stem from simple greed and self-centeredness. Sample: 'AIDS is killing the entire African nation, though there's a vaccine supposedly in preparation, we say we'll kill them off, take their land, and go there for vacation.'
Killing in the Name- Rage Against the Machine: The song is about the corruption of officials, and how those who are in power, can also be those who commit the greatest attrocities, so it's rather perfect for them. Sample: 'Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses. Killing in the name of-! Now you do what they told'ja...'
Jesus of Suburbia- Green Day: The song really isn't the focus, however, there is one particular part of it that strikes to his philosphy rather strongly. Sample: 'Everyone is so full of shit, born and raised by hipocrites.. we are the kids of war and peace...'
Who Wants to Live Forever?- Queen: The song is as the title gives. About how life is important, but how all good things come to an end despite the joys and tears that life can bring. About how to die isn't the most terrible thing, and that some things should be embraced with joy, despite their darker connotations. Sample: Who wants to live forever? Who wants to live forever? All love must die... touch my tears... with your lips, touch my war with your fingertips, and can have forever- and we can love forever!'
I'm So Sick- Flyleaf: A song about being a disgustingly dirty person- not with disease but with life. How where you live, how you live, and what you do, can make you a person sick in the soul. Inokentei is a constantly self depriciating and hating person. Sample: 'I'm so sick, infected with, where I live, let me live without this, anti-bliss, selfishness, I'm so sick!'
Danse Mon Esmeralda- Garou: The song, a piece from 'Notredame du Paris', a musical about the Hunchback, Frollo, Phaebus, and Esmeralda, is a rather amazing and passionate bit sung by Quasimodo after Esmeralda has been hung (sorry kids, this isn't disney.) Anyway, considering his dead wife and his everlasting love for her, it seems right. Sample (Translated from French): ' Let my soul soar far from the miseries of the earth, Let my love to meddle in the light of the universe, Dance, my Esmeralda, sing, my Esmeralda!'
Mama- My Chemical Romance: The song is part of the story of the album, and as such, is about losing the love of ones mother and the main character's relations with his mother. Stand alone, it's about being a soldier who died in war, whose mother hated him for leaving to go fight. In Inokentei's place, it could be seen as the same (though you replace his mother for his wife) and you get the same. Sample: 'Mama, we're meant for the flies. And right now, they're building, a coffin your size- Mama, we're all full of lies. Oh mother, what the war did to my legs and tongue, you should have raised a baby girl, I should have been a better son, if you can coddle the infection they can amputate at once, you shoulda been, I could have been a better son!'

Die Eier Von Satan - Tool: The story behind this is kinda funny. The majority of people that listen to this song, of course, associate it with Nazism and the Third Reich (and the band did very little to distract from that initial impression with the screaming-crowd noises and such. I remember reading one article when I was younger about the satanic nature of Tool's music and their worst song, ''The Hate of Satan.'') Of course, people who know German recognize the lyrics as a recipe for making hash brownies. Elexandre's soundtrack
Elexandre's soundtrack consists mostly of violin music of some style or another.
Guiseppe Tartini - Devil's Trill Sonata: This is one of my favorite pieces of classical music, so I guess it's expected that I would use it for Elexandre. The story behind it is that the composer, Tartini, dreamt that the devil came to him and asked to be his servant. When Tartini gave the devil his violin, he played the most astounding piece of music Tartini had ever heard. Upon waking, he desperately tried to recreate the song, and though it is still considered very technically demanding today, the poor composer was so frustrated with his inability that he would have given up music altogether if it were not his only livelihood. Yeah, hardcore. As for the song itself, it is dignified, proud, brooding, complex, and yet energetic - which I think captures Elexandre very well. (Part One / Part Two / Pop Version)
Outside - To Forgive But Not Forget: (sometimes credited to Aphex Twin): Another instrumental piece. It conveys the unsettled and yet driven feeling Elex experiences when wants to get to the bottom of a particular situation or problem. He is the sort of man who will pursue the truth regardless of the pain or complexity it will bring, and this song reminds me of that. (Youtube)
Apocalyptica - Bittersweet feat. Ville Vallo: Elexandre has very powerful feelings for his wife; while he loves her deeply, their relationship is more complicated and emotionally demanding than the more innocent or fawning romances one might expect of young people. This song speaks to the burden of his intense adoration. "I'm giving up the ghost of love/ in the shadows cast on devotion/ she's the one that I adore/ creed of my silent suffocation." Bond - Libertango: What can I say? This song is sexy. Behind his exterior of self-restraint, Elex is a very sensual and passionate individual. This most certainly shows in his love life and his (often intense) desire, and that's what this piece is all about. (Youtube)
Tchaikovsky - Souvenir de Florence, 4th Movement: Energetic and grand, anticipation mixed with tension and yearning. To me, this song reflects Elexandre's idealistic dreams for the restoration of Silvermoon and Quel'Thalas. (Youtube)
Kamelot - Rule the World: Alright. Gotta have some power metal in here. This song represents the rocky inner conflict between Elexandre's political ambition and self-loathing: "Sometimes I tremble like a little child/ that faces morning with a broken smile/ Sometimes I crumble when the shades unfurl/ sometimes I feel that I could rule the world." There's Run for your life - The Beatles- I can't help but laugh when I listen to it, because it's exactly how Herriman handles a woman going behind his back. That is to say, he may be very abusive, or even kill her.
Bugger off - An Irish Drinking song, which conveys herriman's personality very well. The language is crude, rude, etc. It generally has the feeling of "I'm better than you, and though you had been entertaining before, I'm bored of you now so kindly fuck off."
High Barbaree, performed by Bounding Main- A piratey song about pirates. In it, the lyrics talk about a ship searching for pirates. The Captain says "O hail her! O hail her! Are you a man-o'-war or a privateer?" to a ship upon finding them, to which they reply "Oh, no I'm not a man-o'-war, nor privateer, But I'm a salt sea pirate, all a-lookin' for me fee!" And while Herriman wouldn't come out and say that, it's true. As soon as the pirate in the song says that, they getinto a big sea battle, and the pirates eventually lose, the ship sinks, and they drown. The end --

Balmir is more or less the exact same way, though definitely with more light-hearted music.
Some Say the Devil's Dead - Brobdingnagian Bards- The song has a very optimistic tune, with a prominent flute, and a steadily increasing tempo. Since Balmir was so carefree and generally grateful, I think it's fitting. Other than that, it's general Irish drinking music.
I don't really have much music to fit Melanim. There's very little that I've heard that really makes me think of him.

Ofelia - Javier Navarette- It's fitting to Giu, I think ,because while the song has a very epic feel to it, it's sad, but also very imposing. Think of, I dunno...A king who has just had all of his sons murdered. He's sad, as well as angry, and has the power to back it up, but chooses instead to brood over it. Now, while Giu isn't any sort of king, with no children, and only as much power as he's allowed, he still is supposed to be similar. He's not really sad, though at times angry. It's sad, moreso, that his patriotism is taking a huge toll on his body, and he doesn't care.

Ixinane showed me this neat playlists site a while back. It's a little fragile, but fun. I later tried feeding my selections into Pandora, with somewhat mixed results.
The song I start with, "Boombastic", is I think vintage Kolja: a swaggering ego to the point of silliness, paired with just a little bit of self awareness. I can't help but sing along and enjoy the singer's enthusiasm even while snickering at him.

I like to think that the general trend of all this captures the sense of honor, nobility, and a quirky, high-tech loose canon all rolled into one. The Halo, Indy, and Star Wars bits tend to be more of the "noble warrior" sort of vibe with some of the Mercs tracks being like that too, but with a less noble (EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE!) bent to them. This exploding things trend is reinforced with the C&C tracks while the TF2 music rounds out the quirkier engineer side of the character while still keeping a rather action-oriented theme. Yakety Sax for obligatory chase scenes involving Adriano.

Otep - Ghostflowers: Aedran's main theme. Otep's aggressive female vocals and urban sound are perfect for a tough-girl Sin'dorei who grew up on the underside of Silvermoon. Otep - My Confession: Otep is so appropriate that the band warrants a second song. My Confession represents Aedran's violence and desperation about her situation in life, as I have tried to portray in her blog entries. The vocalist admits "I'm insecure, I need aggression/ to feed the spiders of perception," and continues with "I have many secrets/ and I eat the weak/ And I'm at an end/ and there's no way out." Arch Enemy - Revolution Begins: A metal band with a growling female lead, Arch Enemy captures both Aedran's energy and rebelliousness. Ever a firebrand with a grudge against classism, Revolution Begins is her soundtrack for dissent. It's perfect for Aedran's in-your-face personality, and the on-again, off-again thing she's got going on with Tsilas. Plumb - Better: Alternative rocker Plumb busts out here with a strong, intense sound. As the song above, it details Aedran and Tsilas' rocky relationship, but reveals more openly the nature of their problems - the captain's insecurities. Hmm. So many characters, and so many songs ...
Kharak is a character that has suffered a lot of loss in his life. He has lived most of his life knowing he is broken somehow, and despite this, he maintains some bit of hope. His song would be by Queensryche: Silent Lucidity. The song seems to encompass the two halves to his shattered psyche - the uncertainty and sadness of the injured half that is Kharak, and the protective, watchful guardian that is Chanek.
Scrimshaw.. is reality-challenged, shall we say. She believes in the monsters that grown-ups stop believing in - she sees them. Her eyes see a very different world than others do, and she has trouble communicating her thoughts to others. Her songs would include Pink Floyd: High Hopes. The song never fails to bring vivid pictures to me of a very blasted mindscape of memories and nightmare perception, and the grim clinging to idealized images of a better world. The other song that most fits her is by Toad the Wet Sprocket: Pray Your Gods. It's part dirge, part pleading love song, and part jarring warning.
