Account Safety

MMO Champ reports a confirmed hacking of the Authenticator, with a blue post describing the tricksy and very timing reliant way it's managed.

MMO Post Here. Do be aware, the second half of the post contains (marked) ICC quest spoilers for a future patch.

EDIT: wow.com also has an article here, and they also discourage panicking or deciding whether or not to buy an authenticator based on this recent development. It's taken how many years for even this scheme to work since authenticators were introduced?

An authenticator is, to my mind, still safer than nothing, given the work the keyloggers still have to do to get past it. I often run an Anti-Virus scan, as well as Spybot and AdAware. I keep NoScripts and AdBlocks running on my browsers as well. The steps shown in these posts about the "emcor.dll" file are also helpful. Being aware of attempted hacker tricks and email scams can also keep your account secure.

Safe gaming everyone!

I"m sorry but... all hackers should die.

Thanks for the heads up.  I have an authenticator, and I'm still paranoid.  :D

Hate to say "Told you so", but I told you so. Well, not you lot, but other people. Nothing is safe. Except baby powder. That's pretty safe.

It really was just a matter

It really was just a matter of time before someone found some way around it, honestly.

However, it's still safer than nothing, it's cheap to free depending (Blizzard made no profit on the authenticators to try and keep their clients' accounts safe), and if you follow normal net safety awareness, you're 99% less likely to get hacked even now, given the steps required for even this trojan.

((I got my authenticator or my iPod Touch.  Also use the WoW app to check my characters once a day to make sure they're still wearing what I left them in.  That's probably just my own brand of paranoia though.  ))
