Theryl and Meggie [Art]

These are two character sketches I just did for Theryl and Meggie - I call them that partly because they're not worked over like a finished painting (I don't use the term "speedpaint" because I can't really commit myself to only spending an hour or something on a painting) and partly because I worked from scratch without photo references, save for things like the goggles and armor. I took that approach because I was asked for my own view of the characters, so didn't want to get pulled away into the standards we so often set by picking out actors/actresses... it's a strange thing, but one of my best portraits of Artie was drawn like this, and not from the usual photo of Dame Helen.
Anyway, Meggie was a lot of fun, especially trying to capture her youth, her small frame, and her boyishness, while still keeping her "cute" in some way. I don't now why I gave her Elvis lips, but now that's how I picture her smiling, with that little curl and poutyness. I loved doing the goggles and trying to make her kind of steampunky with the Victorian vest and little shiny brass bits.

Theryl was incredibly intimidating to try to capture. She's been one of my favorite characters on Shadow Council ever since Lorith served her a drink at the Leaf several years ago, and I've always been impressed with both her determined strength and her ever-flawed humanity. The whole time I was drawing and painting her I tried to hear her voice in my head, whether arguing with the Little Goddess or doing what she has to do with her sword, or taking out her anger or trying to grasp happiness. She always seems like a character half out of the light but always trying to look towards it somehow, hence the lighting I tried to pull off. Her hair was inspired partly by the red-on-gray of Boticelli's Venus, and maybe deep down there's a bit of that painting inside Theryl, too.

Anyway, my sincere thanks to Theryl for entrusting me with these characters.
If anyone is interested in having some similar work done, please feel free to PM me about it.

Great fan of Meggie's
Great fan of Meggie's attire, googles included. She sorta reminds me of Drew Barrymore. As for Theryl, I think you did a much better job with her expression. Her face alone sets a great focus for the work and provides a powerful impression.

Very beautiful, you have real talent. I adore the detailing on Meggie's clothes, especially the little pin and the stripes... hard to accomplish, and you did it with grace.

Wow! As much as I like Meggie - especially the lacings on the vest and those awesome lock-picks - Theryl really stands out. Maybe it's because of what you said yourself about knowing that character so well and your concentration on hearing her 'voice' as you drew/painted her. The way she's looking off into the distance, and how she appears strong but as if she's seen a lot..... she's wonderful. I love that little frown of concentration and the way she seems like someone who doesn't *laugh* a lot.....not to mention no reference material used! Yikes.
Fantastic :)

You are truly graced with
You are truly graced with an amazing gift. Were I much more clear in my own mind on exactly how Throgmorton looks, I'd beg, plead, and offer my first-born child for a treatment of my beloved professor, as, IN my head, he looks so much different from the in-game character toon. Alas.
Also, I don't really think I'm going to have any children, so perhaps first-born child is an obvious ploy... :P

I simply can't say how pleased I am with how these turned out. I gave Artie some pretty basic descriptions, told her to run with them, and run she did.
Thank you so much, Artie for putting so very much of your talent and heart into these.

Thank you everyone for the very kind comments. <3
I have been working very hard lately at improving my skillz, which has meant a lot less time for WoW, RP, and blogging. At times I've been a bit sad about it, but this makes it all worthwhile.
Though there's things I like very much about these two there are also aspects that cry out to me for improvement. Next ones will be better!!!
In the meantime, thanks again. You all make me smile and give me more motivation to work harder. ^_^

The thing about love is this: you have to fall into it with everything. Arms flailing, smiling like a maniac, giddy beyond belief, with all of who you are. You have to go big. You have to leave nothing behind. You have to risk it all. That’s the only way it has a chance of working… right?"
