Possibilities
Reggie lay on the couch and idly watched his wife as she drifted around the small apartment, checking bolts of various cloths and stacks of already made bandages. He folded his arms across his chest before clearing his throat, “Where are the cigarettes, hon?”
She paused briefly before going back to counting how many rolls of a certain bandage she had in a small, neat pile, “We’re out.”
“So why didn’t you buy more?” The Half-Elf raised a slender eyebrow, “I haven’t been able to find them since Tuesday and I know you’d have had time to pick up more…”
“I’m quitting, so are you.”
He blinked and sat up, snagging her wrist and pulling her into her lap as tried to walk by, “Bullshit. With what’s been going on lately… Something’s wrong. What’s wrong?”
Cerwis looked at her husband for a moment before relaxing against him and tucking her head under his chin, “…Nothing’s “wrong” exactly… I’ve just been not feeling so great.”
Reggie slipped his hand under the fabric of her shirt and began tracing circles on her lower back, “You’re not getting sick, I know how you get when you’re getting sick and this isn’t it… What else is up?”
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “I was late.”He frowned, not getting it, “Late for what? Late for patrol? You’ll just have to time your smoke breaks better.”
Cerwis punched him lightly in the shoulder, “No, dumbass, I was late.”
“…Oh. Oh… Well, uh… Who’s the father?” Reggie caught her wrist before she could punch him again and hugged her to himself, “I’m kidding. I know I’ve been taking those Troll mixtures, as much as I hate them… Are you sure?”
“I haven’t…seen a healer, if that’s what you’re asking…So no, I’m not really sure but…”
Reggie sighed, “I’ll talk to Lirriel, or Anterian. You’ve had complications with this before, so we’re going to be proactive this time, just in case.”
She bit her lower lip for a moment, “Reg… What are we going to do if I am? I don’t… I can’t, not right now. Not with everything…”
“Things will work out, Wissa. Let’s get a verdict from a proper healer first and we’ll go from there. In the meantime, though, you need a break. Nap with me?” He lay back down on the couch, pulling her down with him.
Cerwis nodded and curled up with her head on his chest, not feeling the urge to argue, “Alright, but just for a little while..”
